A different Mauritius - On vacation with the Rainbow |
We would like our guests to experience more than the beaten tourist track. We want to offer you experiences that will make your vacation unique and memorable. Are you dreaming of experiencing the simple life, like staying on a working farm in the mountains, renting your own cabin or camping out in the forest? We can organise all that for you. And more: before you start your island tour of visiting those nature places, we book you into a restful hotel, so you can get adjusted to the climate in comfort and style. Our tropical island may be small, but it offers many hidden treasures; it’s just a question of knowing where to find them. Follow us for instance to a mountain village where women still wash their clothes in the river. Have a lunch of great island cuisine at a local restaurant built in an old garage. Go fishing for freshwater shrimps or visit the local artist in her workshop. See, smell, taste, hear and feel the environment and gather memories that last a lifetime. If you choose the combination of a great nature setting with very comfortable accommodations, Lakaz Chamarel is a real alternative. Built in a lush valley between green rolling hills, its tastefully designed bungalows with open air bath room allow a feeling of freedom and privacy. Is the sea more your style to enjoy Mother Nature? Then this cosy guest house in that small fisherman village, where the daily routines follow the passing of the tides will be your favourite place to be. Like the colours of the rainbow, our many faceted ways to explore the other side of Mauritius could be described as a truly “holistic holiday”. It will enchant your experience and at the same time contribute to the local population and environmental efforts in the country.

Scared of punishment He was aspiring to become a biologist, until he reached Form III, when a mere dis¬section of frog changed his admiration for human sci¬ence. The only Mauritian to have had a higher degree from the USSR Academy of Arts, Krishna Luchoomun, is now an artist, who has excelled in other forms of visual arts like photography, video, installation among others. He is presently a lec¬turer at the Fine Arts Depart¬ment, Mahatma Gandhi Ins¬titute, and also the President of the Partage Group of ar¬tists, which is part of the International Triangle Art, in Mauritius. He is often invited to participate in art exhibi¬tions and workshops in coun¬tries like England, France, Germany, India, Bangladesh, Kenya, Tanzania, and China. "My primary school the Clairfonds Government School was in the vicinity of my house. It was a time when we used to get milk, dry fruits, cheese at the school. There was a teacher who was always punishing the stu¬dents by pulling the sideburns and making us stand on our toes. Though it was not me going through the punishment, I was afraid to be punished. The school was a beautiful place with its fish pond, playground with had swings and games. I loved the beautiful trees in the yard. My primary schooling was totally academic with not much time for other activi¬ties. Painting, games and sports were not given much importance. |
| "I studied at the Royal College, Curepipe. The excit¬ing part of this school was the environment, the school's architecture and its colonial building. It was quite different from the primary educa¬tion. The change was diffi¬cult. The secondary school was far from my residence. Its environment was differ¬ent. The students came from different places good families and were very academic. It took me some time to make friends. "In Forms I and II, I was not interested in Arts. The leaf painting, potato painting stuff was really boring. The turning point cane in Form III. Miss Lislet Lim Fat had the greatest influence on one and others. She was educated in France and taught us Art. She brought in new techni¬ques, methods, and style. Everyone got interested in her subject. She had the knack to make people love the subject. She taught us new trends and techniques. Now teaching of art is mostly about teaching how to ex¬press one's feelings. "I did also enjoy the extra curricular activities apart from painting. I liked photography and was also a mem¬ber of the Saint John's Am¬bulance. My best friends Raj Mohabeer, Sudesh Reetoo, and I used to enjoy football and RC Curepipe were the only place in Mauritius where people played football on tar. Once while playing basketball, I hurt my friend, unintentionally when I threw the ball on his face. He start¬ed bleeding profusely. I still feel bad about hurting my friend, and this is the worst memory." Source: News on Sunday, April 25 – 1 May 2008 | |

Mauri-Sunshine - Root Crafts |
The Roots Crafts Shop in Chamarel Nella Besegue and the young women working in her shop produce hand made souvenirs such as bags, clothes, jewellery and decorative items. Nella also offers paintings and local produce made by artists and farmers from the area. Maurisun offers some of her souvenirs as welcome gifts to their clients, who may also visit the crafts shop on one of the Rainbow Tours. Tourists are thus encouraged to buy handcrafted souvenirs made in Mauritius and help support small local entrepreneurs. Nella aims to employ young girls from the village. She also teaches arts and crafts, as she is sensible to the fact that young girls tend to drift to the city, where they may become prematurely pregnant or fall prey to drugs, AIDS or prostitution. With her shop, Nella wants to be a place where the girls can find something to do which may help them develop self esteem and gain healthy social values for their future life. Maurisun encourages and helps visitors to support local projects. For more information contact

Mauri-Sunshine Project St. Jacques School provides free primary education in the small and secluded village of Chamarel. Maurisun has incorporated a visit of St. Jacques into one of their Rainbow Tours. By sharing a lesson with the children, visitors may get a feeling of life in the village. The children appreciate the visits and are happy to tell about their island, their culture and their families and the visitors appreciate the exchange with the vivacious youngsters. Only small groups are taken into the school and it is strictly observed that the visits take place on a basis of mutual respect. Through exchange with the tourists, the children gain self-assurance, and are encouraged to study. Since the visits started, most of them consider a job in the tourist industry. Maurisun encourages and helps visitors to support local projects, such as the reconstruction of an old nunnery and its transformation into a guesthouse. In this way, work for the village and a steady income for the people involved can be provided in the long run. A part of the income created by the “nunnery guesthouse will go back to the school. Maurisun will feature the Chamarel Nunnery Guesthouse on the list of their island accommodation and you may hopefully be able to bock your retreat or vacation from civilization there soon. Inspired by their Rainbow visit, a group of tourists sponsored a scholarship for a young girl who thus became the first female secretary of Chamarel and promptly found employment at a local hotel
