Our Rainbow Colours: Looking through the colours of the rainbow In Hindu mythology God Shiva tells his companion Devi that her essence is “like beams of light, rising up through the centres of your spine, representing life itself rising within you”. The word Shiva uses for those centres is chakra. Actually meaning “wheel”, chakra has become a fixed term in modern colour therapy and holistic teaching; it stands for energy centres located within the human body, each of them associated with a certain colour. According to modern science as well as old mythology, there are 7 main centres or chakras, their colours ranging from red at the bottom through orange, yellow, green, turquoise, blue and royal blue right to violet on the top. Every one of us therefore contains the entire spectrum of the rainbow. A rainbow on the other hand is also a nature-phenomenon: the light of the sun broken by the prism of millions of tiny water droplets and forming one large flaming band of colours in the sky. Rainbows have been used to travel between the worlds in countless legends and tales. The legendary rainbow snake protects and guides the Aborigines of Australia, whereas the ancient Nordic Gods Thor and Odin, used it to travel to and from Valhalla, their enchanted home.
