Rainbow: Element Synergy Writing about the 3 elements “Ocean, Land and Culture” is easy. Trying to fit below mentioned items into them, just impossible. Maybe we from Maurisun Adventure & Tours didn’t try hard enough; maybe we realised that art and inspiration cannot be isolated and tied down. This is why we added “Synergy” to our Rainbow. The meaning of Synergy is equivalent to “create more by combining the elements”. Within the Maurisun Rainbow, this is the domain of products taken from the islands natural resources, harvested processed and hand crafted into souvenirs; the latter originating from the French expression “se souvenir”, which in English means to remember. A souvenir in our context is therefore an item causing its owner to remember a great holiday in Mauritius. Visitors will find many such objects offered to them though, some of which originate from other countries where they are produced in factories and mostly from artificial substances. These are certainly not the souvenirs to bring home. “Real souvenirs” from Mauritius, we consider to be hand made or with the help of simple tools; created on the island itself, or on the neighbouring island of Rodrigues. Mauritian handy crafts are rich and varied. They encompass basket and hat making, embroidery, pottery, painting, stone sculpting, carving, creating items from recycled glass as well as agricultural products such as bottled honey. One could call them pieces of art and attribute them to the arts and crafts element. Souvenirs must not necessarily be dust collectors on shelves. They may much rather be culinary delights, favourite clothes or jewels and health preserving gifts of a nature which is more powerful than we can imagine! If you are aware of the fact that 1 gram of soil contains more than 1 million micro organisms, you will certainly believe that a soil sample randomly taken from a field in Japan produced a cure for River Blindness a disease that had been a major problem in Africa. So one could call nature “Gods Pharmacy”, and place natural products within the land element. |
