My work with indigenous peoples all over the globe has led me to understand the importance for us to remember that we are a part of nature. Only then will we appreciate and share the abundance this planet presents, will we feel safe and comfortable within nature and within ourselves. The Hawaiians have a very beautiful saying about this: Malama o ka aina — take care of the land and the land takes care of you. In this sense, my entire work is focused on the love for nature and its healing effects on human beings and animals alike: nature’s love as the true value; the source of all life.
In order to make you understand this value, let me tell you a true story: A very famous millionaire wanted to help the starving during the terrible famine in Ethiopia. For this purpose, he broadcasted an appeal in his privately owned radio stations and was able to raise 10 million dollars. Proudly, he flew to Ethiopia to present his cash check. To his great dismay, however, he was told very politely and clearly, that nothing could be done with it. “We appreciate your efforts”, the Ethiopians said. “But we cannot do anything with the money you brought, because there is nothing to buy in the shops. The draught causing this famine has completely deprived us. Please take your check, go back and bring food quickly, as we are dying.” Like waking from a dream, the man looked around. And for the first time in his life, he was able to see the true values. After he recovered from his shock, he understood the fact that money cannot be eaten. So he went home and organized a great convoy of goods. With these, he then returned to Ethiopia, where he was able to safe many lives, including his own. |
